Generator
An electric generator is a device which converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. Electricity can be generated in both the ways
1. By rotating the coil, keeping the magnetic field at rest.
2. By rotating the magnetic field, keeping the coil at rest.
The basic principles behind a generator.
1 . Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction.
Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction states that whenever a conductor cuts magnetic flux, an emf ( electromotive force ) is induced in that conductor. Magnitude of the induced emf is equal to the rate of change of flux linkages.
Mathematically ,
e = -N ( dΦ/dt )
N – Number of turns of coil
Φ – flux linkage
t – time
dΦ/dt – rate of change of flux with respect to time.
2 . Fleming’s right-hand rule
Fleming’s right-hand rule shows the direction of induced current when a conductor moves in a magnetic field. It is used to determine the direction of current in a generator’s windings.
When a conductor moves through a magnetic field, an electric current is induced in the conductor due to Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction . The current in the conductor can have two possible directions. Fleming’s right-hand rule determines in which direction the current flows.
The right hand is held in such a way that the thumb, index finger and middle finger are mutually perpendicular to each other.
The thumb shows the direction of the motion of the conductor relative to the magnetic field.
The first finger shows the direction of the magnetic field.
Then the second finger shows the direction of the induced or generated current within the conductor.
Components required
- Sunboard
- Insulated copper wire
- Permanent magnet 2 pieces
- Bicycle spoke
- Feviquick
- LED
- Plastic pipe
Construction
Fix the bicycle spoke in between the two permanent magnets in such a way that magnet position becomes symmetrical about the axle. Then glue it.
Cut the sunboards according to specifications and apply glue.
Fix the plastic pipes around the spoke so that winding must not touch the axle.
Wind the copper wire carefully up to 800 turns.
Burn the two terminals of winding to remove insulation and join the LED legs.
Technical specifications

Working
Here we are generating electricity by rotating magnetic field, keeping the coil stationary. Rotate the axel using finger tips to glow the LED. Approximately 2 to 3 volt is generated here with finger tip rotation.
Precauctions
Magnet must not touch the coil while revolving.
While winding the coil take care that tuns should be neither loose nor too tight.
Air gap between magnet and winding should be minimum to reduce reluctance.
Apply some lubricants on axel contacts for smooth rotation.
